How to avoid traffic summons in Malaysia

Avoid traffic summons?

If you drive often in Malaysia, this might interest you. If you drive and often go over the speed limit, then this might interest you even more.

As drivers in Malaysia, we often see traffic police setting up road blocks to stop those speeding cars for 'saman'. It is an open secret that the main purpose of this is for them to get some 'duit kopi' as most offending drivers would rather pay them some RM10 notes than to get a fine of RM300 for speeding.

However, I have been told that you can actually get away with this without paying to the officers and no summon will be issued also.

This is how it works.

We all know that they use speed cameras to record down the car speed and registration number. There is a mechanism in the camera that once the officer press a button to confirm a car is speeding, the information of the offense will be saved and locked inside the camera. If they are planning to stop the drivers and ask for money, they will inform the officers in front with radio and not press the record button, assuming that they will get the bride from the drivers. In other words, by the time they stop and tell you that they have the record of you speeding, in actual fact they have already deleted the information and not able to charge you for summon.

Knowing this, you can actually refuse to pay them anything on the spot. Also, remember NOT to agree that you were actually speeding and do NOT sign the summon that they might write for you. You should just deny it and ask them to send the summon to you if they have your speeding record in the camera already. The officer has no choice but to let you go and you won't have to pay for the bride or summon too. Isn't this great?

You may argue that they may have already pressed the record button at the camera. If that is the case, then they won't be able to delete the information and hence no point for you to give them bride anyway. You can just sit at home and wait for the summon to come.

In any case, it is best to just follow the speed limits and drive safely. Or at least, know the spots where there will be speed cameras and slow down on those roads.
